FASD stands for Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.
Range of lifelong conditions caused by alcohol exposure before birth, including fetal alcohol syndrome, with distinctive facial features, growth deficiency and brain abnormalities, and milder forms with learning, attention and behavior problems. No safe amount of alcohol in pregnancy is known.
Example: FASD evaluation: smooth philtrum, thin upper lip, short palpebral fissures, prenatal alcohol confirmed.
Usage notes
Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) was described in the US in 1973. Studies of US first-graders estimate that FASD may affect a few percent of children, many undiagnosed. Diagnosis requires a multidisciplinary assessment. FASD is entirely preventable by avoiding alcohol during pregnancy.
