AGE stands for Acute gastroenteritis, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.
Sudden inflammation of the stomach and intestines, usually viral (norovirus or rotavirus), causing vomiting, diarrhea and sometimes fever. In children the main danger is dehydration, managed with oral rehydration in most cases.
Example: AGE with mild dehydration; ondansetron 4 mg ODT and oral rehydration trial, tolerated well.
Usage notes
A single dose of ondansetron reduces vomiting and the need for IV fluids. Antidiarrheal drugs such as loperamide are not recommended for young children. Rotavirus vaccination has greatly reduced severe childhood gastroenteritis. Bloody diarrhea or high fever suggests bacterial causes.
