T2DM stands for Type 2 diabetes mellitus, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.

The most common form of diabetes, about 90–95 percent of cases, caused by insulin resistance combined with progressive loss of insulin secretion. Strongly linked to excess weight, inactivity, age and family history, it is managed with lifestyle change and drugs such as metformin, GLP-1 receptor agonists, SGLT2 inhibitors and insulin.

Example: New T2DM, A1C 7.6, BMI 34; start metformin and refer to diabetes education.

Usage notes

Also written T2D or DM2. Formerly called adult-onset or non-insulin-dependent diabetes, names abandoned because it increasingly affects children and many patients eventually need insulin. Current ADA standards choose drugs partly by coexisting heart failure, kidney disease and atherosclerotic disease, not just glucose lowering. Substantial weight loss can bring some patients into remission.
