1. Radioactive iodine

Iodine-131 given by mouth to destroy thyroid tissue, used to treat Graves' disease, toxic nodules and, after thyroidectomy, to ablate remnant tissue or treat metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer. Thyroid cells take up iodine selectively, sparing most other tissues.
Example: Graves' disease, declines surgery; RAI 15 mCi planned after methimazole washout.
Saul Hertz first treated a hyperthyroid patient with radioactive iodine in Boston in 1941. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are absolute contraindications, and patients follow radiation-safety precautions for several days. Most Graves' patients become hypothyroid afterward and take levothyroxine. RAI can worsen thyroid eye disease, sometimes requiring steroid cover.

Italy's national public broadcaster, running television channels such as Rai 1, radio networks and the RaiPlay streaming service. Headquartered in Rome.
Example: The Sanremo Music Festival is broadcast live on RAI every February.
Its predecessor URI began radio broadcasting in 1924; the company became RAI in 1944 and started television in 1954. RAI broadcasts the Sanremo festival, which selects Italy's Eurovision entry. Usually written Rai in its branding.
