TI-RADS stands for Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Ultrasound scoring system that assigns points for a thyroid nodule's composition, echogenicity, shape, margin and echogenic foci, sorting it into categories TR1 (benign) to TR5 (highly suspicious). The category and size determine whether biopsy or follow-up is recommended.
Example: Right lobe 2.2 cm solid hypoechoic nodule, ACR TI-RADS TR4; FNA recommended.
Usage notes
The American College of Radiology version, published in 2017, is the most widely used in the US; European and Korean systems differ slightly. It was designed to reduce biopsies of benign nodules, which are found on ultrasound in a large share of adults. Pronounced "tie-rads".
