1. Side-Side-Side (congruence)

Units & Measurements · Math Abbreviations

Triangle congruence criterion: if all three sides of one triangle equal the corresponding sides of another, the triangles are congruent. The name also covers SSS similarity, when the three side ratios are equal.

Example: The triangles are congruent by SSS, since AB = DE, BC = EF and AC = DF.

SSS explains why triangles are rigid: three fixed side lengths determine the shape completely, which is why bridges and roof trusses are built from triangles, while a four-sided frame can flex. Euclid proved it as Proposition 8 of Book I of the Elements.

2. Sick sinus syndrome

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Dysfunction of the heart's natural pacemaker, the sinoatrial node, causing inappropriately slow rates, pauses, or alternating slow and fast rhythms known as tachy-brady syndrome. It mostly affects older adults and, with AV block, is one of the two main reasons for permanent pacemaker implantation.

Example: Holter showed 4.8-second sinus pauses with dizziness; diagnosis SSS, dual-chamber pacemaker scheduled.

Also called sinus node dysfunction (SND). In tachy-brady syndrome, drugs that slow fast atrial fibrillation can worsen the pauses, so a pacemaker is often needed before rate-control drugs can be used safely. Contributing causes include age-related fibrosis, beta-blockers, digoxin, hypothyroidism and sleep apnea.

3. Same-store sales

Business & Finance · E-commerce & Retail Abbreviations

Year-over-year growth in sales at stores open for at least a set period, often 12 or 13 months, used by US retailers and restaurant chains to show growth that does not come from opening new locations.

Example: The chain's SSS fell 2% as fewer customers visited, even though prices rose.

Also called comparable-store sales or "comps." Investors scrutinize the split between traffic and average ticket within same-store sales growth.
