1. SubRip Text

Technology & Computing · File Format Abbreviations

Simple plain-text subtitle format listing numbered captions, each with a start and end time and the text to display. Video players, YouTube, social platforms and editing software widely accept it.

Example: Upload the SRT along with the video so viewers can turn on English captions.

The format comes from SubRip, a Windows program that used OCR to extract subtitles from DVDs. Timestamps use the form hours:minutes:seconds, milliseconds. SRT supports little formatting beyond basic italics and bold, so broadcasters and streaming services often use richer formats such as WebVTT or TTML. Subtitle files must match the video's frame timing, or captions drift.

2. Speech reception threshold

Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations

Softest level at which a listener can correctly repeat half of a list of familiar two-syllable words (spondees such as "baseball" or "hot dog"), measured during a hearing test. It cross-checks the pure-tone audiogram.

Example: SRT 40 dB HL right, consistent with PTA 42 dB; word recognition 88 percent.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association also calls it the speech recognition threshold. Agreement within about 10 dB of the pure-tone average supports a reliable test. Word recognition testing at comfortable loudness then measures clarity of speech understanding.

3. Street and Racing Technology

Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations

Performance division of Chrysler, now part of Stellantis, responsible for high-performance Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler models such as the Challenger SRT Hellcat. SRT engines include the supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8.

Example: The SRT badge means the Jeep has the big supercharged V8 under the hood.

The group grew out of the team that developed the Dodge Viper. SRT Hellcat models, introduced for 2015, produced more than 700 horsepower and became a symbol of late-era American muscle cars. Stellantis ended production of its Hemi muscle cars in 2023 before reviving the V8 in some models.
