SHAP stands for SHapley Additive exPlanations, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.

A method that explains an individual prediction by assigning each input feature a contribution value, based on Shapley values from cooperative game theory. It is widely used to interpret tree models and credit or medical risk scores.

Example: The SHAP plot shows income and debt ratio pushed this applicant's risk score up the most.

Usage notes

Introduced by Scott Lundberg and Su-In Lee in 2017, with an open-source Python library. Shapley values come from economist Lloyd Shapley's 1953 work, recognized in his 2012 Nobel Prize. Exact computation is expensive, so approximations such as TreeSHAP and KernelSHAP are used.
