STT stands for Speech-to-text, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
Technology that transcribes spoken audio into written text for dictation, captions, meeting transcripts and voice commands. Product documentation often uses the term interchangeably with automatic speech recognition.
Example: Captions are generated by STT and corrected by an editor before the video goes live.
Usage notes
Cloud services from Google, Microsoft and Amazon offer STT APIs, and OpenAI's open-source Whisper model (2022) made accurate multilingual transcription widely available. Accuracy drops with background noise, strong accents and overlapping speakers. The reverse process is text-to-speech.
