CategoriesTechnology & Computing

SVM stands for Support vector machine, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.

A supervised learning algorithm that classifies data by finding the boundary, or hyperplane, that separates classes with the widest possible margin. With kernel functions it can learn curved boundaries, and it was a leading method before deep learning.

Example: An SVM with an RBF kernel separated the two tumor types with 94 percent accuracy.

Usage notes

Developed by Vladimir Vapnik and colleagues; the modern soft-margin version appeared in a 1995 paper by Corinna Cortes and Vapnik at Bell Labs. The "support vectors" are the training points closest to the boundary. SVMs still work well on small, high-dimensional datasets such as text and genomics.
