RNN stands for Recurrent neural network, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
A neural network that processes sequences one step at a time while carrying a hidden state forward, giving it a memory of earlier inputs. RNNs were standard for speech recognition, language modeling and time series before transformers.
Example: The RNN reads the sensor stream step by step and flags anomalies as they happen.
Usage notes
Simple RNNs struggle to learn long-range dependencies because of vanishing gradients, which LSTM and GRU cells were designed to fix. Their step-by-step processing is hard to parallelize, a key reason transformers replaced them. Newer state-space models revisit recurrent ideas for efficient processing of long sequences.
