1. Singapore dollar
Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations
Singapore's currency, managed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, which steers the exchange rate against a basket of trading partners' currencies instead of setting interest rates. It is divided into 100 cents.
Example: The taxi from Changi Airport to the city costs about SGD 40.
Under a 1967 Currency Interchangeability Agreement, the Singapore dollar and Brunei dollar trade at par and are accepted in each other's countries. Singapore uses polymer notes, and it stopped issuing its S$10,000 note, among the world's highest-value banknotes, in 2014.
2. Stochastic gradient descent
Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations
An optimization method that trains models by repeatedly nudging parameters in the direction that reduces error, estimating the gradient from a small random batch of examples rather than the full dataset. Variants of SGD train nearly all neural networks.
Example: Plain SGD with momentum generalized better than Adam on our image dataset.
Based on the stochastic approximation method of Herbert Robbins and Sutton Monro (1951). The learning rate controls the step size and is the most important setting to tune. Popular extensions include momentum, RMSprop and Adam. In currency codes SGD is the Singapore dollar.
