TWD stands for New Taiwan dollar, a currency abbreviation.

Taiwan's currency, issued by the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and commonly written NT$. It is called "new" because it replaced the old Taiwan dollar in 1949 at 40,000 to 1.

Example: The night-market dinner came to TWD 450 for two people.

Usage notes

The cent subunit is no longer used in practice. Spoken Mandarin calls the unit yuan or kuai. Taiwan's export-driven economy, dominated by semiconductors, makes the currency sensitive to global chip demand.
