1. South Australia
Geography & Places · Australian State and Territory Abbreviations
Southern state with Adelaide as its capital, founded in 1836 as a planned settlement of free colonists rather than convicts. It was among the first places in the world to give women the vote and the right to stand for parliament (1894), and its postcodes start with 5.
Example: The winery ships cases within Australia from Tanunda SA 5352.
Locals call it SA, as in SA Health and SA Police. The same letters mean Saudi Arabia in ISO country codes and are often used for South Africa informally, so context matters. Adelaide is known as the City of Churches.
2. Société anonyme / Sociedad anónima (public limited company)
Business & Finance · Company Type Abbreviations
Corporation form with share capital and limited liability used in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Spain, Latin America and many other civil-law countries; the names mean "anonymous society," reflecting that owners are not named. It is the usual form for large and listed companies.
Example: Nestlé S.A., headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland, is the world's largest food company by revenue.
Written SA or S.A. A French société anonyme requires minimum share capital of €37,000, while a Spanish sociedad anónima needs €60,000. The Portuguese and Brazilian form is also S.A. (sociedade anônima). Swiss companies often show both AG and SA versions of their names.
3. Saudi Arabia
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Saudi Arabia, the largest country on the Arabian Peninsula, has Riyadh as its capital, SAU as its alpha-3 code, .sa as its domain and the riyal (SAR) as its currency. The two holiest cities of Islam, Mecca and Medina, are within its borders.
Example: Visa applications for the Umrah pilgrimage list SA as the destination.
Sports bodies use KSA. SA also means South Australia and is used informally for South Africa, whose ISO code is ZA. In 2017 Saudi Arabia granted citizenship to a robot named Sophia, a widely reported curiosity.
4. South Africa
Geography & Places · Country Name Abbreviations
Informal abbreviation used by South Africans and in regional media for their country, as in SA Rugby or SA Tourism. It is not an official code: ISO uses ZA, and SA in ISO data means Saudi Arabia.
Example: Load-shedding schedules affect businesses across SA.
Because SA can mean South Africa, Saudi Arabia or South Australia, international documents should spell the name out or use ZA. Sport uses RSA for South Africa and KSA for Saudi Arabia.
5. Surface area
Units & Measurements · Math Abbreviations
The total area of all the faces or curved surfaces of a three-dimensional object, measured in square units. Standard formulas include SA = 6s² for a cube and SA = 4πr² for a sphere.
Example: Find the SA of a cylinder with radius 3 cm and height 10 cm: 2πr² + 2πrh ≈ 245 cm².
Geometry worksheets abbreviate surface area as SA and volume as V; lateral surface area (LSA or LA) leaves out the top and bottom faces. Surface area drives practical problems such as paint coverage and packaging material, and the surface-area-to-volume ratio explains why small animals lose heat faster than large ones.
6. Seaman Apprentice
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rank Abbreviations
Navy and Coast Guard enlisted rank at pay grade E-2 in the seaman (deck and administrative) apprenticeship group, shown by two diagonal stripes. Many sailors hold SA while in "A" school, the technical training that follows boot camp.
Example: SA Jones reported aboard USS Bainbridge straight from A school.
The parallel E-2 titles are Fireman Apprentice (FA), Airman Apprentice (AA), Constructionman Apprentice (CA) and Hospitalman Apprentice (HA). Seaman-group stripes are white on dress blues. In weapons usage, SA means small arms, and the letters have many civilian meanings, so context matters.
7. South African Airways
Transportation & Travel · Airline Code Abbreviations
South Africa's flag carrier, based at Johannesburg's O. R. Tambo International Airport and a member of Star Alliance. It went through a business rescue process from 2019 to 2021.
Example: SA 360 from Johannesburg to Cape Town is a two-hour hop.
ICAO code SAA; callsign "Springbok." The callsign honors the springbok antelope, a national symbol whose image appeared on earlier tails. Founded in 1934, SAA was a key link to the world during the apartheid era, when many countries banned its flights.
8. Sinoatrial
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Describes the sinoatrial node, the heart's natural pacemaker, a cluster of specialized cells in the upper right atrium near the entrance of the superior vena cava. It generates the impulses that set normal rhythm, typically 60 to 100 times per minute at rest.
Example: Holter shows intermittent SA exit block with 2-second pauses.
Also called the sinus node; Arthur Keith and Martin Flack described it in 1907. Its firing rate is constantly adjusted by the autonomic nervous system, speeding up with sympathetic stimulation and slowing with vagal tone. Dysfunction of the SA node causes sick sinus syndrome. Unrelated meanings include South Africa and the Salvation Army.
9. Suicide attempt
Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations
Self-injurious act with at least some intent to die, whether or not injury results. A history of prior attempts is one of the strongest predictors of future suicide, so it is a key element of every suicide risk assessment.
Example: Prior SA by overdose in 2021; now euthymic with protective factors, outpatient follow-up.
Psychiatric notes record the date, method, lethality and circumstances of each attempt. The period after discharge from psychiatric hospitalization is a time of especially high risk. In cardiology SA means sinoatrial, as in the SA node, so SA is usually spelled out in shared records.
10. San Antonio
Geography & Places · City and Neighborhood Abbreviations
Seventh-largest US city, home to the Alamo and the River Walk, frequently shortened to SA or Satx by locals and in local media. San Antonio was founded as a Spanish mission settlement in 1718.
Example: Fiesta brings parades and street parties to SA every April.
SA has many other meanings, including South Africa, Saudi Arabia and South Australia. The NBA's Spurs have won five championships.
11. Saturday (Sa)
Units & Measurements · Day of the Week Abbreviations
Calendar widgets, fitness timetables and course schedules use Sa for Saturday, paired with Su for Sunday. It appears in iCalendar recurrence rules as SA.
Example: Weekend clinic hours: Sa 9 to 1; Su closed.
Two-letter headings are common in date pickers on websites and phone apps, where single letters would leave two S columns. In capitals, SA usually means South Africa, Saudi Arabia or the Salvation Army, so context helps.
12. Solutions architect
Business & Finance · Job Title Abbreviations
Technical professional who designs the overall structure of a technology solution, such as a cloud deployment or enterprise software integration, matching business requirements to products and architecture patterns. Cloud providers employ many SAs to help customers design systems.
Example: An AWS SA reviewed our architecture and suggested moving the batch jobs to serverless functions.
Solutions architects are often certified by cloud providers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud. In sales organizations, the role overlaps with sales engineer. SA also commonly means South Africa, Saudi Arabia and, in company names, société anonyme.
13. Small arms
Military · Weapon and Military Equipment Abbreviations
Military category for weapons carried and fired by individuals, such as pistols, rifles, carbines, shotguns and light machine guns, as distinct from crew-served weapons and artillery.
Example: The patrol took SA fire from the tree line but suffered no casualties.
Reports often write "small arms fire" as SAF. Small arms ammunition is generally up to .50 caliber (12.7mm). International efforts to curb illicit trafficking focus on "small arms and light weapons" (SALW). In Navy rank usage, SA means seaman apprentice.
14. Summer associate
Law & Legal · Legal Profession Abbreviations
Law student, usually after the second year, working at a law firm for about eight to ten weeks over the summer, often with the expectation of a full-time offer after graduation. Large firms pay summer associates at the same weekly rate as first-year associates.
Example: Each SA is assigned a partner mentor and works on at least two litigation and two corporate projects.
Summer programs are the main hiring pipeline at large firms, and offer rates are typically very high in strong markets. Students are usually recruited through on-campus interviewing (OCI) or earlier direct outreach. Some firms also run shorter programs for first-year students. In other contexts, SA can mean South Africa or the Salvation Army.
