1. Financial advisor

Business & Finance · Job Title Abbreviations

Professional who advises clients on investments, retirement, insurance, tax and estate planning, paid through fees, commissions on products sold or both. In the US, many FAs work for brokerage firms such as Morgan Stanley or Merrill, while others run independent advisory practices.

Example: My FA suggested increasing my 401(k) contributions and adding a bond fund.

Spelled advisor or adviser; US securities law uses "investment adviser" with an e. "Financial advisor" itself is not a protected title in the US, so qualifications vary, from securities licenses such as the Series 7 to the CFP certification. In English soccer, FA is the Football Association.

2. Flight attendant

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

Cabin crew member responsible for passenger safety and service, trained in evacuations, firefighting, first aid and security. US rules require one FA on airliners with 20 to 50 passenger seats, two with 51 to 100, and one more for each additional 50 seats.

Example: Our FA asked everyone in the exit row to confirm they were willing to assist in an emergency.

The gender-neutral title replaced "stewardess" and "steward" in the US during the 1970s. The first airline stewardess was Ellen Church, a registered nurse hired by Boeing Air Transport in 1930. US flight attendants hold an FAA Certificate of Demonstrated Proficiency; European cabin crew carry a cabin crew attestation.

3. Free agent

Sports · American Football Abbreviations

Player whose contract has expired and who is free to sign with any team, subject to league rules. NFL free agency opens each March with the new league year, and teams' moves are tracked as FA signings and losses.

Example: The Jets' biggest FA signing was a veteran left tackle on a three-year deal.

Modern free agency followed the end of baseball's reserve clause in 1975-76, and the NFL adopted its current system with the salary cap in 1993. A two-day negotiating window, nicknamed "legal tampering", precedes the official start. In soccer FA usually means the Football Association.

4. The Football Association

Sports · Sports Governing Body Abbreviations

England's soccer governing body, responsible for the England national teams, the FA Cup, refereeing and the grassroots game. It also owns Wembley Stadium in London.

Example: The FA charged the manager with misconduct over his comments about the referee.

Founded on October 26, 1863, at the Freemasons' Tavern in London, it is the oldest football association in the world, which is why its name has no "English". Its 1863 rules began the split between association football (soccer) and rugby. The FA Cup, first played in 1871-72, is the oldest national football competition. Usually written "the FA".

5. Fluorescein angiography

Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations

Diagnostic test in which fluorescein dye is injected into an arm vein and rapid photographs of the retina show how it circulates, revealing leakage, blocked vessels and abnormal new vessels. It is used for diabetic retinopathy, vein occlusions and macular degeneration.

Example: FA OS: late leakage from classic CNV; start anti-VEGF.

Patients' skin and urine turn yellow for a day afterward, and nausea is common; serious allergic reactions are rare. Often written IVFA (intravenous fluorescein angiography). Indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) shows deeper choroidal vessels. In pharmacy FA can mean folic acid.
