1. Republic of South Africa

Geography & Places · Country Name Abbreviations

Official name of South Africa since it became a republic in 1961, abbreviated RSA in sport, official documents and older vehicle stickers. It is the country code used by FIFA and the IOC, as on scoreboards showing RSA v NZL.

Example: RSA lifted the Rugby World Cup trophy for the fourth time in 2023.

ZA and ZAF, the ISO codes, come from Dutch Zuid-Afrika, and the domain is .za. South Africa has three capitals: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial). Some locals simply say SA.

2. Rivest-Shamir-Adleman

Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations

A public-key cryptosystem used for encryption, digital signatures and key exchange, whose security rests on the difficulty of factoring the product of two large prime numbers. It secures certificates, software signing and many older TLS setups.

Example: Generate a 4096-bit RSA key pair for the SSH deployment user.

Published in 1977 by Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir and Leonard Adleman at MIT; British GCHQ mathematician Clifford Cocks had devised an equivalent system in 1973 that stayed classified until 1997. Keys of at least 2048 bits are recommended. A large quantum computer running Shor's algorithm could break RSA, driving the move to post-quantum cryptography.

3. Reverse shoulder arthroplasty

Medical · Musculoskeletal & Rheumatology Abbreviations

Shoulder replacement that reverses the normal anatomy, placing a ball on the socket side and a cup on the humerus, so the deltoid muscle can lift the arm when the rotator cuff is torn beyond repair. It is used for cuff tear arthropathy, complex fractures and failed prior replacements.

Example: Massive irreparable cuff tear with pseudoparalysis; RSA offered.

The modern design is credited to French surgeon Paul Grammont in the 1980s, and it was approved in the US in 2003. Use has expanded rapidly and it now accounts for a large share of shoulder replacements. Also written RTSA. Outside medicine RSA can mean the Republic of South Africa.
