1. Attorney General
Government & Politics · Political Abbreviations · also used in law
Chief law officer of a government. The US Attorney General heads the Justice Department and serves as the federal government's chief lawyer, while each state has its own attorney general who enforces state law and represents the state in court.
Example: The AG announced a multistate lawsuit against the opioid distributor.
Forty-three states elect their attorney general; elsewhere the governor, legislature or state supreme court makes the choice. State AGs often act together in multistate suits, such as the 1998 tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. The UK, Australia and India also have attorneys general, with different roles. In German company names AG means Aktiengesellschaft, a stock corporation.
2. Silver (Ag)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
No metal conducts electricity or heat better than silver, element 47, which also reflects more visible light than any other metal. Beyond coins, jewelry and tableware, it goes into solar-cell contacts, electronics, mirrors and antimicrobial dressings, and light-sensitive silver halides made film photography possible.
Example: Sterling silver must contain at least 92.5% Ag, the rest usually copper.
The symbol comes from Latin argentum, from an ancient root meaning white or shining; Argentina was named for the silver early Spanish explorers hoped to find there. Silver tarnishes black because it reacts with sulfur compounds in the air, forming silver sulfide. The lowercase "ag," short for agriculture, is an unrelated abbreviation.
3. Aktiengesellschaft (stock corporation)
Business & Finance · Company Type Abbreviations
Corporation form in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein whose capital is divided into shares that may be listed on a stock exchange. It is the usual form for large German and Swiss companies such as Siemens AG, BMW AG and Novartis AG.
Example: Shares of Siemens AG trade on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange under the ticker SIE.
A German AG needs minimum share capital of €50,000 and has a two-tier structure: a management board (Vorstand) and a supervisory board (Aufsichtsrat), on which employees of companies with more than 2,000 staff elect half the members. Swiss AGs need CHF 100,000. The French equivalent in Switzerland is SA, so the same company may appear under both suffixes.
4. Anion gap
Medical · Laboratory Test Abbreviations
Calculated value (sodium minus the sum of chloride and bicarbonate) that estimates unmeasured anions in the blood. A normal gap is roughly 8 to 12 mEq/L on many analyzers, and a high gap in a patient with metabolic acidosis points to lactic acidosis, ketoacidosis, kidney failure or poisoning with methanol, ethylene glycol or salicylates.
Example: AG 24 with a lactate of 1.1 and ketones negative; checking an osmolal gap for toxic alcohols.
Modern ion-selective analyzers give lower normal gaps (around 3 to 11 mEq/L), so the lab's own range matters. Albumin is the main unmeasured anion, and the gap falls by about 2.5 mEq/L for each 1 g/dL drop in albumin, which can hide a true high-gap acidosis. Mnemonics for causes include MUDPILES and the newer GOLDMARK, proposed in The Lancet in 2008.
5. Antigua and Barbuda
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Antigua and Barbuda, a two-island Caribbean nation with St. John's as its capital (alpha-3 ATG), owns the .ag domain, which German and Swiss firms like because AG abbreviates Aktiengesellschaft, a public limited company.
Example: Antigua's citizenship-by-investment applications list AG as the issuing country.
Antigua is said to have a beach for every day of the year. AG also means agriculture and attorney general, and Ag is the chemical symbol for silver.
6. Advocate General
Law & Legal · Court Abbreviations
Member of the Court of Justice of the European Union who delivers an independent written opinion recommending how a case should be decided before the judges rule. The Court has 11 Advocates General; their opinions are not binding, but the judges follow them in a majority of cases and they are widely cited.
Example: According to the AG's opinion, the national rule was incompatible with EU free-movement law.
The role is modeled on the French commissaire du gouvernement. Opinions are cited as "Opinion of Advocate General" plus the name, case number and ECLI identifier. Separately, the Advocate General for Scotland is a UK government law officer who advises on Scots law.
7. Aerographer's Mate
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations
Navy weather and ocean forecasters who take meteorological and oceanographic observations, analyze satellite and radar data and brief commanders and aircrews on conditions affecting operations. Aboard carriers they run the weather office that supports flight operations.
Example: AG1 Nolan briefed the strike group on the typhoon's projected track.
The rating title is unusual and dates to the early days of naval aviation, when weather observers were called aerographers. AGs train at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi alongside Air Force weather specialists and serve in the Navy's oceanography command as well as at sea.
8. Aminoglycoside
Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations
Bactericidal antibiotics, including gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin and streptomycin, used mainly IV for serious gram-negative infections and in synergy against some gram-positive bacteria. Inhaled tobramycin treats Pseudomonas in cystic fibrosis.
Example: AG gentamicin 7 mg/kg q24h; random level at 6-14 h per nomogram.
Streptomycin, discovered in 1943, was the first effective tuberculosis drug. Aminoglycosides can cause kidney injury and permanent hearing or balance loss, so levels are monitored and courses kept short. Once-daily extended-interval dosing exploits their concentration-dependent killing. In laboratory medicine AG means anion gap.
