1. Retinopathy of prematurity
Medical · Pediatric & Neonatal Abbreviations
Abnormal growth of blood vessels in the developing retina of premature infants that can lead to retinal detachment and blindness if severe. US guidelines call for screening eye exams in infants born at 30 weeks or less or weighing 1,500 g or less.
Example: ROP exam: zone II, stage 2, no plus disease; repeat in 1 week.
In the 1940s and 1950s an epidemic of blindness in premature babies, then called retrolental fibroplasia, was traced to unrestricted oxygen therapy. ROP is described by zone, stage and the presence of "plus disease". Treatment uses laser or injections of anti-VEGF drugs. Pronounced as letters.
2. Reorder point
Business & Finance · Logistics, Supply Chain & Trade Abbreviations
Inventory level at which a new order should be placed so that it arrives before stock runs out, calculated as average demand during the supplier's lead time plus safety stock.
Example: We sell 20 units a day with a 10-day lead time, so the ROP is 200 plus safety stock.
Inventory systems trigger purchase suggestions automatically when stock falls to the ROP. In insurance, ROP means return of premium.
3. Return of premium
Business & Finance · Insurance Abbreviations
Feature or rider on term life or disability insurance that refunds some or all premiums paid if the insured outlives the term or makes no claims, in exchange for a much higher premium.
Example: The ROP term policy refunds everything if I'm alive at 65, but costs triple.
Critics note the refund is not adjusted for inflation or lost investment returns. In logistics, ROP means reorder point.
