1. Postoperative day

Medical · Surgical Abbreviations

Counting system for days after surgery in which the day of the operation is POD 0. Surgical notes, clinical pathways and complication timelines all use POD numbers, such as removing drains on POD 2 or expecting bowel function by POD 3.

Example: POD 3 s/p sigmoid colectomy: tolerating diet and ambulating; plan discharge tomorrow.

Classic teaching links postoperative fever to timing: fevers in the first day or two are often inflammatory, while wound infections tend to appear several days later. Anastomotic leaks after bowel surgery classically present around POD 5 to 7. In anesthesia research POD can instead mean postoperative delirium.

2. Print on demand

Business & Finance · E-commerce & Retail Abbreviations · also used in general use and entertainment

Production model in which items such as T-shirts, mugs, posters and books are printed only after a customer orders them, so the seller holds no inventory. Services such as Printful, Printify and Amazon KDP handle printing and shipping.

Example: My POD shop has 200 designs but zero inventory.

POD lowers startup risk but leaves sellers with thin margins and limited control over production and shipping speed. Self-published authors use POD so paperbacks never go out of print. In shipping, POD means proof of delivery.

3. Proof of delivery

Business & Finance · Logistics, Supply Chain & Trade Abbreviations

Evidence that a shipment reached its recipient, such as a signed delivery receipt, signature on a handheld device, photo or GPS record, used to confirm delivery, trigger invoicing and resolve disputes.

Example: The customer says the package never arrived, so request the POD from the carrier.

Freight carriers often won't pay damage claims unless shortages or damage were noted on the POD at delivery. Electronic proof of delivery (ePOD) has largely replaced paper. In print-on-demand e-commerce and personal finance, POD has other meanings.

4. Postoperative delirium

Medical · Surgical Abbreviations

Acute, fluctuating disturbance of attention and awareness that develops in the days after surgery, especially in older adults and after cardiac and hip fracture surgery. It is associated with longer hospital stays, functional decline and higher mortality.

Example: High risk for POD after hip fracture repair; CAM screening twice daily.

Prevention bundles focus on orientation, sleep, early mobility, hearing and vision aids, hydration and avoiding deliriogenic drugs such as benzodiazepines and anticholinergics. Research articles use POD for delirium, while surgical notes use it for postoperative day, so readers judge by context. The American Geriatrics Society has published guidance on postoperative delirium in older adults.

5. Payable on death

Business & Finance · Personal Finance Abbreviations · also used in law

Beneficiary designation on a bank or credit union account, such as checking, savings or a certificate of deposit, that releases the money directly to the named person after the owner dies, once a death certificate is presented. The beneficiary has no access while the owner is alive.

Example: I made my sister the POD beneficiary on my savings account so she can reach it quickly.

Sometimes called a Totten trust or in-trust-for (ITF) account. POD accounts avoid probate but not estate tax. FDIC insurance on such accounts is calculated per beneficiary, up to five, which can raise coverage well above $250,000. In shipping, POD instead means proof of delivery.

6. Port of discharge

Business & Finance · Logistics, Supply Chain & Trade Abbreviations

Port where cargo is unloaded from a vessel, shown on bills of lading and booking confirmations, which may differ from the final place of delivery inland.

Example: The POD is Rotterdam, with on-carriage by barge to Duisburg.

Shipping documents distinguish the port of loading (POL), port of discharge (POD) and final place of delivery. Context usually makes clear whether POD means port of discharge or proof of delivery.

7. Point of difference

Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations

In brand positioning, an attribute or benefit that customers associate strongly with one brand and believe they cannot find to the same degree in competitors, giving them a reason to choose it.

Example: Our POD is the lifetime warranty, which no competitor matches.

Part of Kevin Lane Keller's positioning framework, which holds that strong brands combine credible points of parity with distinctive points of difference.
