1. Supply chain management
Business & Finance · Logistics, Supply Chain & Trade Abbreviations
Coordination of the flow of materials, information and money from raw-material suppliers through manufacturing, distribution and retail to the end customer, covering planning, sourcing, production, logistics and returns.
Example: She has a master's degree in SCM and runs procurement for a car parts maker.
Consultant Keith Oliver of Booz Allen Hamilton is credited with coining "supply chain management" in a 1982 interview. The SCOR model from the Association for Supply Chain Management organizes the field into plan, source, make, deliver, return and enable. Supply chain resilience became a board-level issue after pandemic-era disruptions.
2. Sternocleidomastoid (muscle)
Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations
Neck muscle running from the sternum and clavicle to the mastoid process behind the ear, turning the head to the opposite side and flexing the neck. It divides the neck into anterior and posterior triangles, landmarks used in surgery and lymph node examination.
Example: Firm mass in the right SCM of a 3-week-old with head tilt: congenital muscular torticollis.
Infants with congenital torticollis have a tight SCM and are treated with stretching exercises. The muscle assists breathing during respiratory distress, so visible SCM use signals increased work of breathing. It is supplied by the accessory nerve (cranial nerve XI).
3. Source control management
Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations
Another name for version control, the tracking and management of changes to source code, also applied to the platforms around it. In CI tools such as Jenkins, "SCM" refers to the repository a pipeline checks code out from.
Example: Point the Jenkins job's SCM settings at the main branch of the repository.
Also expanded as software configuration management, a broader discipline that covers builds, releases and change control. In business writing SCM nearly always means supply chain management, so context decides. Git's own website describes Git as a distributed version control system.
