Monthly cross-functional process in which sales, marketing, operations, supply chain and finance agree on one demand forecast and a matching supply plan, reconciling them with financial targets at an executive meeting.

Example: At this month's S&OP meeting we agreed to add a second shift for the holiday peak.

Usage notes

Popularized in the 1980s by consultants associated with Oliver Wight. A more finance-integrated evolution is called integrated business planning (IBP). The typical cycle runs through product review, demand review, supply review, reconciliation and an executive meeting.
