SUID stands for Sudden unexpected infant death, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.
Umbrella term for any sudden, unexpected death of an infant under one year, explained or unexplained, including SIDS, accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed, and deaths of unknown cause. About 3,500 US infants die this way each year.
Example: Death certificate lists SUID; unsafe sleep environment with adult bed-sharing noted.
Usage notes
The CDC uses SUID because many deaths once labeled SIDS are now classified as accidental suffocation or undetermined, reflecting better death scene investigation. Most SUID deaths occur in unsafe sleep environments. The CDC's SUID Case Registry tracks cases in participating states.
