CategoriesTechnology & Computing

QD-OLED stands for Quantum dot organic light-emitting diode, a consumer electronics abbreviation.

Display technology from Samsung Display that combines a blue OLED layer with quantum dots converting light into red and green, aiming for brighter, purer colors than conventional OLED while keeping perfect blacks.

Example: The QD-OLED monitor shows richer reds than my older white-OLED TV.

Usage notes

Samsung Display began mass production in 2022, supplying Sony's A95K and Samsung's S95B TVs and the Alienware AW3423DW monitor that year. The competing WOLED approach from LG Display uses white OLED with color filters. Early QD-OLED panels showed a magenta tint on blacks in bright rooms because they lack a polarizer.
