1. Root cause analysis
Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations · also used in business
Structured investigation to find the underlying causes of a failure, accident or quality problem rather than only its symptoms, so that corrective actions prevent recurrence. Common tools include the 5 Whys, fishbone (Ishikawa) diagrams and fault tree analysis.
Example: The RCA traced the pump failures to a supplier's change in seal material, not operator error.
The 5 Whys technique is credited to Sakichi Toyoda and was popularized by the Toyota Production System. Kaoru Ishikawa introduced the cause-and-effect "fishbone" diagram in the 1960s. Good RCA looks for system and process causes rather than assigning individual blame.
2. RCA connector (phono plug)
Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations
Round plug-and-socket connector for analog audio and composite video, color-coded yellow for video, red for right audio and white or black for left audio. Turntables, older TVs, VCRs, consoles and amplifiers use RCA cables.
Example: Connect the turntable to the amplifier's phono input with RCA cables.
The connector is named after the Radio Corporation of America, which introduced it in the 1940s to connect phonographs to amplifiers; it is also called a phono or cinch connector. Component video uses three RCA plugs colored red, green and blue for higher-quality analog video. The coaxial S/PDIF digital audio connection uses a single RCA plug.
3. Radio Corporation of America
Organizations & Companies · Company and Brand Abbreviations
American electronics and broadcasting company that dominated radio and early television, founding NBC in 1926 and developing color TV standards. The RCA name now survives as a licensed brand and the RCA Records label.
Example: Grandpa's old RCA console radio still works.
Created in 1919 by General Electric to take over the American Marconi company. RCA's famous logo showed Nipper the dog listening to a phonograph, from the painting "His Master's Voice". GE bought RCA in 1986 and broke it up; RCA Records is now owned by Sony Music.
4. Right coronary artery
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Coronary artery arising from the right side of the aorta that runs in the groove between the right atrium and ventricle, supplying the right ventricle and, in most people, the inferior wall, the sinoatrial node and the AV node.
Example: Inferior STEMI with proximal RCA occlusion; RV infarct suspected, avoid nitrates.
In roughly 80 percent of people the RCA gives rise to the posterior descending artery, called right dominance. Because it supplies the conduction nodes, RCA heart attacks often cause bradycardia and heart block, which usually resolve. Proximal RCA blockage can cause right ventricular infarction, recognized by ST elevation in the right-sided lead V4R.
