1. Patient-reported outcome
Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations
Report of a patient's health status, symptoms, function or quality of life that comes directly from the patient without interpretation by a clinician. PROs serve as trial endpoints, support drug labeling claims and are increasingly collected in routine care.
Example: PROs showed less fatigue and better physical function with the new regimen.
The FDA issued guidance on using PROs to support labeling claims in 2009 and has since developed patient-focused drug development guidance. The NIH-funded PROMIS system provides standardized measures across many conditions. Electronic collection on phones or tablets is called ePRO.
2. Performing rights organization
Law & Legal · Intellectual Property Abbreviations · also used in entertainment
Organization that licenses the public performance of musical works on behalf of songwriters and music publishers and distributes the royalties it collects. Radio stations, streaming services, concert venues, bars and stores pay PROs for blanket licenses.
Example: The bar received a letter from a PRO asking it to license the music played at its open-mic nights.
In the US the main PROs are ASCAP (founded 1914), BMI (1939), SESAC and Global Music Rights. ASCAP and BMI operate under antitrust consent decrees dating to 1941, so rate disputes go to a federal "rate court". Other countries usually have one national society, such as PRS for Music in the UK.
