PGR stands for Post-grant review, an intellectual property abbreviation.

Patent Office proceeding at the PTAB in which a third party can challenge a newly issued patent on any ground of invalidity, including ineligible subject matter and inadequate written description. It must be requested within nine months of the patent's grant.

Example: The competitor filed a PGR eight months after the patent issued, attacking its written description.

Usage notes

Created by the America Invents Act for patents with effective filing dates on or after March 16, 2013. The Board institutes if it is more likely than not that at least one claim is unpatentable, a higher bar than for IPR. A losing petitioner is estopped from raising the same grounds later.
