1. Randomized controlled trial
Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations
Study design in which participants are assigned by chance to receive an intervention or a comparison (placebo, usual care or another treatment) and are followed for predefined outcomes. Randomization balances known and unknown factors between groups, making RCTs the strongest single-study design for showing that a treatment causes an effect.
Example: A large RCT found the new drug cut heart failure hospitalizations by 30% versus placebo.
The 1948 British Medical Research Council trial of streptomycin for tuberculosis, designed by Austin Bradford Hill, is often cited as the first modern RCT. Blinding, allocation concealment and intention-to-treat analysis guard against bias, and results are reported using the CONSORT guideline. RCTs are expensive and may enroll narrower populations than everyday practice. In orthopedics RCT can mean rotator cuff tear.
2. Rotator cuff tear
Medical · Musculoskeletal & Rheumatology Abbreviations
Tear in one or more of the four rotator cuff tendons, most often the supraspinatus, causing shoulder pain, night pain and weakness lifting the arm. Tears may follow injury or develop gradually with age and can be partial or full thickness.
Example: Full-thickness supraspinatus RCT 1.5 cm on MRI; arthroscopic repair offered given weakness.
Degenerative tears are so common in older adults that many cause no symptoms. Tears in younger patients after acute trauma are usually repaired early. In research writing RCT almost always means randomized controlled trial, so orthopedic notes typically say "cuff tear". Massive irreparable tears may be treated with reverse shoulder arthroplasty.
