1. Postpartum hemorrhage

Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations

Excessive bleeding after childbirth, defined by ACOG as cumulative blood loss of 1,000 mL or more, or bleeding with signs of low blood volume, within 24 hours. It is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide, most often from poor uterine contraction.

Example: PPH, QBL 1,450 mL from atony; oxytocin, methylergonovine, TXA 1 g; bleeding controlled.

Causes are remembered as the four Ts: tone (uterine atony), trauma, tissue (retained placenta) and thrombin (clotting problems). Tranexamic acid given within three hours of birth reduces deaths from bleeding, as shown by the WOMAN trial in 2017. Quantitative blood loss measurement is replacing visual estimation.

2. Patent Prosecution Highway

Law & Legal · Intellectual Property Abbreviations

Arrangements among patent offices that let an applicant whose claims were found allowable by one office request accelerated examination of corresponding claims at another participating office. It reduces duplicated work and speeds up grants.

Example: After the JPO allowed our claims, we filed a PPH request with the USPTO to speed up examination.

The first pilot began in 2006 between the USPTO and the Japan Patent Office, and dozens of offices now take part, many through the Global PPH. Claims in the later application must sufficiently correspond to the allowed claims. The USPTO generally charges no fee for a PPH request.
