1. Plastic and reconstructive surgery

Medical · Medical Specialty Abbreviations

Restores form and function to the body through reconstruction after cancer or trauma, burn care, hand surgery, cleft lip and palate repair, gender-affirming surgery and cosmetic procedures. US training is through integrated six-year residencies or independent pathways after general surgery.

Example: PRS will perform free flap coverage after the leg debridement.

The name comes from the Greek "plastikos", meaning to mold, not from plastic material. The American Board of Plastic Surgery certifies surgeons, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons represents them. "Plastics" is the usual hospital nickname for the service.

2. Polygenic risk score

Science & Engineering · Genetics Abbreviations

Single number summarizing a person's inherited predisposition to a trait or disease, calculated by adding up the small effects of many genetic variants identified in GWAS. PRSs are being studied for coronary artery disease, breast cancer and diabetes risk assessment.

Example: A man in the top 5% of the PRS distribution had roughly triple the average risk of heart disease.

Also called polygenic score (PGS) or genetic risk score. Scores derived mainly from European-ancestry data predict less accurately in other populations, a major equity concern. Use of PRSs to select embryos during IVF is offered commercially but is widely criticized by geneticists.
