1. Passive range of motion
Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations
Joint movement produced entirely by an outside force, such as a therapist, caregiver or machine, with the patient's muscles relaxed. It maintains joint mobility when patients cannot move a limb themselves.
Example: PROM to BLE all planes x10 reps BID to prevent contractures.
Nurses and family members are often taught PROM for paralyzed or comatose patients. Measuring PROM helps determine end-feel, the sensation at the end of motion that distinguishes bony blocks from soft tissue tightness. In obstetrics PROM means premature (prelabor) rupture of membranes.
2. Prelabor rupture of membranes
Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations
Rupture of the amniotic sac before labor begins, at term (37 weeks or later). Induction of labor is generally recommended rather than waiting, to reduce infection without increasing cesarean delivery.
Example: Term PROM at 39 weeks, no contractions; start oxytocin induction.
ACOG uses "prelabor" instead of the older "premature", which wrongly suggested preterm timing. Term PROM occurs in roughly 8 percent of pregnancies. Group B strep status guides antibiotic use. In rehabilitation PROM means passive range of motion.
3. Patient-reported outcome measure
Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations
Standardized, validated questionnaire that captures patient-reported outcomes such as pain, function, symptoms or quality of life in a scorable way. Examples include the Oxford Hip Score, the KOOS knee survey and PROMIS short forms.
Example: Pre-op and 6-month PROMs show the Oxford Knee Score improved from 18 to 39.
England's NHS began a national PROMs program in 2009 for hip and knee replacement and other procedures, publishing hospital-level results. US value-based payment programs increasingly require PROMs for joint replacement. In obstetrics PROM means premature rupture of membranes, and in rehabilitation passive range of motion.
