PCRE stands for Perl Compatible Regular Expressions, a programming abbreviation.

A C library implementing the regular-expression syntax and features of Perl, such as lookahead, lazy quantifiers and named groups. PHP, Nginx and many other tools use it, and "PCRE" also names this regex flavor in general.

Example: Nginx location blocks use PCRE syntax, so escape the dots in the file extensions.

Usage notes

Written by Philip Hazel starting in 1997. The newer PCRE2 series, first released in 2015, replaced the original library, which is no longer maintained. GNU grep's -P option enables PCRE-style patterns.
