OLT stands for Orthotopic liver transplantation, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Replacement of a diseased liver with a donor liver placed in its normal anatomic position, the definitive treatment for end-stage liver disease, acute liver failure and selected liver cancers. Grafts come from deceased donors or, as a partial graft, from living donors.
Example: Status post OLT 2019 for MASH cirrhosis; on tacrolimus, trough goal 5–8 ng/mL.
Usage notes
"Orthotopic" means the new organ goes where the old one was, unlike a kidney transplant, which is placed in the pelvis. Thomas Starzl performed the first human liver transplant in 1963 and the first long-term success in 1967. Five-year patient survival now exceeds about 75 percent. Many notes simply write LT or LTx.
