1. National Guard

Military · Military Unit and Organization Abbreviations

Reserve military force of the US Army and Air Force organized by state, territory and the District of Columbia. Guard units serve governors in state emergencies and can be federalized by the president for overseas deployments and national missions.

Example: The governor activated the NG to help with flood rescues along the river.

The Guard traces its lineage to the first militia regiments of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, organized on December 13, 1636. Guard members serve under state authority (Title 32 or state active duty) or federal authority (Title 10). Its two components are the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.

2. Nasogastric

Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations

Describes a tube passed through the nose and esophagus into the stomach, used to decompress the stomach in bowel obstruction or ileus, to give feeds or medications, and to lavage the stomach. Placement for feeding must be confirmed, usually by chest X-ray, before use.

Example: NG tube to low intermittent suction, 600 mL bilious output overnight.

Often written NGT for nasogastric tube. Bedside pH testing of aspirate is used for confirmation in some countries, while auscultating an air bolus is considered unreliable. A nasojejunal (NJ) tube passes beyond the stomach for patients with gastroparesis or severe pancreatitis. Misplacement into the airway is a recognized never event in the UK when feeding begins.

3. Nigeria

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Africa's most populous country, with more than 220 million people, Abuja as its capital since 1991 and Lagos as its commercial center. NGA is the alpha-3 code and the naira trades as NGN.

Example: Fintech apps in NG process millions of naira transfers each day.

Nigeria's film industry, Nollywood, is one of the world's largest by output. Niger is NE, a frequent mix-up. In texting NG means no good.

4. Nanogram (ng)

Units & Measurements · Metric and SI Unit Abbreviations

A billionth of a gram, used in laboratory measurements of hormones, drugs, tumor markers and toxins. Prostate-specific antigen, ferritin and vitamin D levels are reported in ng/mL in US labs.

Example: Her 25-hydroxyvitamin D level came back at 32 ng/mL.

To convert vitamin D results, multiply ng/mL by about 2.5 to get nmol/L, the unit used in the UK and much of Europe. Drinking-water limits for contaminants such as PFAS are set in nanograms per liter, which is equivalent to parts per trillion. In clinical shorthand, NG more often means nasogastric, as in an NG tube.
