OGD stands for Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
British and Commonwealth term for upper GI endoscopy, the same procedure Americans call EGD. NHS referral pathways use OGD for investigating dyspepsia, anemia, dysphagia and weight loss, often with an urgent two-week-wait route for suspected cancer.
Example: Two-week-wait OGD requested for progressive dysphagia and 6 kg weight loss.
Usage notes
The leading "O" reflects British spelling of oesophagus. Patients in the UK are often offered throat spray alone instead of sedation. The terms "gastroscopy" and "upper GI endoscopy" are also used interchangeably with OGD in British hospitals.
