NLU stands for Natural language understanding, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
The part of natural language processing focused on extracting meaning from text or speech, such as a user's intent, the entities mentioned and sentiment. Voice assistants and chatbots use NLU to decide what a request is asking for.
Example: The NLU layer maps "move my 3 pm to tomorrow" to a reschedule intent with a time entity.
Usage notes
Classic NLU systems classified intents and filled slots, as in Amazon Alexa skills and Google's Dialogflow. Large language models blurred the line between understanding and generation. Benchmarks such as GLUE (2018) and SuperGLUE measured NLU progress until models saturated them.
