1. Neural network
Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations
A computing model made of layers of interconnected nodes, or artificial neurons, whose connection weights are adjusted during training so the network learns to map inputs to outputs. Neural networks underlie deep learning, image recognition and language models.
Example: A small NN trained on vibration data predicts motor failures a week in advance.
Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts proposed artificial neurons in 1943, and Frank Rosenblatt built the perceptron in 1958. Training by backpropagation was popularized in 1986 by David Rumelhart, Geoffrey Hinton and Ronald Williams. Despite the name, these networks are only loosely inspired by biological brains.
2. Double net lease
Business & Finance · Real Estate & Mortgage Abbreviations
Commercial lease in which the tenant pays rent plus property taxes and insurance, while the landlord remains responsible for structural repairs and some maintenance.
Example: The NN lease leaves the roof and parking lot with the landlord.
Definitions vary by market, so the lease text matters more than the label.
3. Nomen nescio (name unknown) (N.N.)
Writing & Everyday · Genealogy Abbreviations
Placeholder in genealogies, church records and indexes for a person whose name is not known, as in "m. N.N." for an unidentified spouse.
Example: The register records only that Peter Dahl married N.N. in 1702.
Latin nomen nescio means "I do not know the name." Genealogists use it so a family tree can show a known relationship without inventing a name. Many databases use "Unknown" or a blank surname field instead.
