NER stands for Named-entity recognition, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
An NLP task that finds and labels names of real-world things in text, such as people, organizations, places, dates and amounts. It is used for search, document processing, news analysis and redacting personal information.
Example: Run NER on the contracts to extract every party name and effective date.
Usage notes
Became a standard task through the Message Understanding Conferences of the 1990s. Libraries such as spaCy and Stanford's NLP tools provide pretrained models. Ambiguity is the main challenge: "Jordan" may be a person, a country or a brand depending on context.
