1. New Jersey
Geography & Places · US State Abbreviations
The Garden State is the most densely populated US state and ratified the Constitution on December 18, 1787, as the third state. Trenton is the capital and Newark the largest city, and the state sits between the New York and Philadelphia metro areas.
Example: Commuters from Hoboken, NJ ride the PATH train into Manhattan.
Both AP style and tradition use N.J. The two-letter code arrived in 1963. Agencies such as NJ Transit and the New Jersey Turnpike use the initials in their names. Do not confuse the state with Jersey, the Channel Island, whose ISO code is JE.
2. Nasojejunal
Medical · Medication Route Abbreviations
Feeding tube passed through the nose, stomach and duodenum into the jejunum, used for feeding and medication when the stomach must be bypassed, as in severe pancreatitis, gastroparesis or high aspiration risk.
Example: Continue Peptamen at 50 mL/h via NJ; hold PO intake.
Placement usually requires endoscopy or fluoroscopy, unlike nasogastric tubes. Medicines needing stomach acid for absorption, such as some antifungals, may work poorly when given into the jejunum. The surgically placed alternative is a jejunostomy tube (J-tube).
