NCLEX-PN stands for National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses, a standardized test abbreviation.
Licensing exam for licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses (LPNs and LVNs), developed by the NCSBN and delivered as a computerized adaptive test. Like the RN version, it moved to the Next Generation NCLEX format in April 2023, with clinical judgment case studies and pass-or-fail results.
Example: The vocational nursing program reported a 94 percent first-time NCLEX-PN pass rate.
Usage notes
The PN exam focuses on care within the practical nurse's scope, such as data collection and basic interventions, rather than full assessment and care planning. California and Texas call the license LVN instead of LPN, but the exam is the same everywhere.
