NNAT stands for Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, a standardized test abbreviation.

Pearson ability test, developed by psychologist Jack Naglieri, that uses only shapes and geometric designs in progressive matrix puzzles. Because it requires no reading or verbal skills, districts use it to find gifted students among English learners and other underrepresented groups.

Example: Students who are new to English take the NNAT instead of the verbal ability screener.

Usage notes

The current edition is the NNAT3, which reports a Naglieri Ability Index with a mean of 100. Research on whether nonverbal tests identify more diverse gifted populations has produced mixed results. It is often given alongside verbal measures rather than alone.
