1. Licensed practical nurse

Nurse who provides basic bedside care, such as vital signs, wound care, medication administration and monitoring, under the direction of a registered nurse or physician. Training is typically a one-year certificate program followed by the NCLEX-PN.
Example: LPN administers 0900 meds on the long-term care hall and reports changes to the RN supervisor.
Scope of practice varies by state, especially for IV therapy and assessment. LPNs work widely in nursing homes, clinics and home health. Many later complete LPN-to-RN bridge programs. Called licensed vocational nurse (LVN) in California and Texas, and enrolled nurse in some other countries.
