NAEP stands for National Assessment of Educational Progress, a standardized test abbreviation.

Federal assessment, known as the Nation's Report Card, that tests representative samples of US students in grades 4, 8 and 12 in reading, mathematics and other subjects. Results are reported for the nation, the states and some large urban districts, never for individual students or schools.

Example: Our state's fourth-grade math scores on NAEP rose slightly while reading scores declined.

Usage notes

Administered by the National Center for Education Statistics since 1969, with policy set by the National Assessment Governing Board. NAEP achievement levels (Basic, Proficient, Advanced) are deliberately demanding, so "Proficient" on NAEP is a higher bar than proficiency on most state tests. Pronounced "nape".
