NCLEX-RN stands for National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, a standardized test abbreviation.
Computerized adaptive licensing exam that every US registered nurse must pass, developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Since April 2023 the Next Generation NCLEX has included clinical judgment case studies and ends after 85 to 150 questions within five hours, with results reported only as pass or fail.
Example: She found out she passed the NCLEX-RN two days later through the quick results service.
Usage notes
Most Canadian provinces adopted the NCLEX-RN in 2015. Nurses educated abroad can take it after credential review to work in the US. Nursing schools report first-time pass rates as a key measure of program quality. The separate NCLEX-PN serves practical and vocational nurses.
