MOPP stands for Mission-oriented protective posture, a military term abbreviation.
Flexible system of protective gear levels against chemical and biological threats, from MOPP 0 (gear available) to MOPP 4, in which troops wear the full protective suit, mask, gloves and boots.
Example: The unit went to MOPP 4 after the chemical alarm sounded.
Usage notes
Pronounced "mop." Working in MOPP 4 is exhausting, especially in heat, so commanders balance protection against performance. "MOPP gear" is a common name for the protective suit itself. Basic trainees experience the gas chamber while learning to use their masks.
