1. Myocardial perfusion imaging

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Nuclear stress test that injects a radioactive tracer at rest and during stress, then images the heart to show regions with reduced blood flow. Stress is induced with exercise or drugs such as regadenoson or adenosine, and images are acquired with SPECT or PET cameras.

Example: Regadenoson MPI: small reversible inferior defect, EF 58%; consider angiography.

Common tracers include technetium-99m sestamibi and tetrofosmin for SPECT and rubidium-82 or N-13 ammonia for PET, which offers better resolution and blood-flow quantification. Fixed defects suggest scar, while reversible defects indicate ischemia. Patients avoid caffeine for 12 to 24 hours before vasodilator stress because it blocks the drugs' effect. Patients usually call it a "nuclear stress test."

2. Multipoint injection

Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations

Fuel injection system with one injector per cylinder spraying fuel into the intake port just upstream of the intake valve. MPI replaced single-point throttle-body injection and was the standard design before direct injection.

Example: The base engine uses MPI, which is simpler and cheaper to maintain than the turbo GDI.

Also called MPFI (multipoint fuel injection) or port fuel injection (PFI). MPI keeps intake valves clean because fuel washes over them, an advantage over direct injection. Some modern engines, such as certain Toyota designs, combine MPI and direct injection.
