NADH stands for Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (reduced), a biology abbreviation.
Reduced, electron-carrying form of NAD, produced during glycolysis and the citric acid cycle. NADH delivers its electrons to the mitochondrial electron transport chain, where their energy is used to make most of the cell's ATP; each NADH yields roughly 2.5 ATP.
Example: Glycolysis produces two NADH per glucose, which must be reoxidized for the pathway to continue.
Usage notes
NADH absorbs ultraviolet light at 340 nanometers while NAD+ does not, so many clinical enzyme assays measure the change at that wavelength. During intense exercise or in anaerobic organisms, NADH is recycled by fermentation, producing lactate or ethanol.
