1. Massive transfusion protocol
Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations
Hospital protocol that rapidly delivers large amounts of blood products, typically red cells, plasma and platelets in balanced ratios, to patients with life-threatening hemorrhage.
Example: MTP activated: cooler 1 delivered, 6 PRBC, 6 FFP, 1 platelet apheresis.
Balanced 1:1:1 ratios of plasma, platelets and red cells were supported by the PROPPR trial published in 2015. Tranexamic acid and calcium are often given as part of the protocol. In anatomy MTP means metatarsophalangeal joint.
2. Metatarsophalangeal (joint)
Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations
Joints where the long bones of the foot (metatarsals) meet the toes. The first MTP joint at the base of the big toe is the classic site of gout attacks (podagra), bunions (hallux valgus) and turf toe.
Example: Exquisitely tender, red first MTP overnight; joint aspirate shows urate crystals.
Hallux rigidus is arthritis of the first MTP that causes stiffness and pain when pushing off. Rheumatoid arthritis often affects the smaller MTP joints early, making a squeeze across the forefoot painful. In transfusion medicine MTP means massive transfusion protocol.
