Government & Politics · Police Abbreviations

General term for a sworn officer with arrest powers, covering city police, sheriff's deputies, state troopers and federal agents. LEO appears in laws, training materials, discounts and online communities.

Example: The restaurant offers a 20 percent LEO discount with a valid badge.

Pronounced as letters or as the name "Leo." Federal law uses the phrase in statutes such as the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act. Off-duty LEOs face special rules on carrying firearms on aircraft. In space science, LEO means low Earth orbit, an unrelated meaning.

2. Low Earth orbit

Science & Engineering · Astronomy & Space Abbreviations · also used in technology

Orbit up to about 2,000 kilometers above Earth's surface, where satellites circle the planet in roughly 90 to 127 minutes. The International Space Station, the Hubble Space Telescope and broadband constellations such as Starlink operate in LEO, which is cheaper to reach and offers low signal delay.

Example: Each Starlink satellite orbits in LEO at about 550 kilometers.

Thousands of satellites now crowd LEO, raising concern about collisions and debris; Donald Kessler warned in 1978 that a cascade of collisions could make some orbits unusable, the Kessler syndrome. Atmospheric drag gradually lowers satellites in LEO, so they need boosts or eventually reenter. Apart from the Apollo lunar missions of 1968-1972, human spaceflight stayed in LEO for more than half a century.
