LDC stands for Least developed country, an economics abbreviation.
United Nations category for low-income countries facing severe structural barriers to development, based on income per capita, human assets and economic vulnerability. LDCs receive preferential trade access, aid and technical support.
Example: After graduating from LDC status, Bangladesh will gradually lose some duty-free access to European markets.
Usage notes
The UN created the category in 1971, and about 44 countries are now on the list, most of them in Africa. Countries graduate after meeting thresholds at two consecutive reviews; Botswana was the first to do so, in 1994. Bangladesh has been scheduled to graduate in 2026.
