HICP stands for Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices, an economics abbreviation.
Consumer price index compiled by every EU country on a common methodology, coordinated by Eurostat, so that inflation can be compared across member states. The euro-area HICP is the measure the European Central Bank targets at 2 percent.
Example: Euro-area HICP inflation eased to 2.2 percent, edging closer to the ECB's target.
Usage notes
The official name keeps the British spelling "Harmonised." Unlike many national indices, the HICP excludes owner-occupied housing costs, a long-debated gap. The UK's CPI follows the same methodology. Core HICP excludes energy, food, alcohol and tobacco.
